Blackjack is in his Forever Home!!

After a long time thinking about it, and seeing how Blackjack was getting along with my dogs, I've decided to let him stay with me and my pack. After all poor Blackie has been through, I don't think he needs another loss. He's really starting to fit into the pack. Now, this is not the breed of dog I would have looked for in a rescue, but he's growing on us, and has won our hearts.

I'm currently working on a portrait of Blackie, and will post it when it's finished. All for now...

Blackie's Story Continues

Recently, we took all the dogs to a local wildlife area, which was the same place where we found Blackie back in April. One of the park rangers drove up in his truck and looking amazed at Blackie, he said:
"I know you!"
Surprised, I asked, "Do you know who owns this dog?"
"No, he's one of the many dogs I've seen abandoned out here. We tried to catch him, but he ran away. We often need to call animal control to get the stray dogs before they starve or are attacked and killed by coyotes. It's a terrible way for a dog to die."
Then I said, "We found him on April 10. So how long had he been out here?" I asked.
"About 3 days." He said.
We continued to talk about the sad situation with abandoned dogs, and the park ranger seemed happy that we had picked up and cared for this one very lucky animal. As the ranger was preparing to drive off, he smiled at Blackie and said:
"You made it!"

So after many hikes with all the dogs, my pack is starting to really bond with Blackie. Even Odie, my Beagle mix, once afraid of Blackie, has warmed up to him. We are starting to think that Blackie may have found a home with us. He's become a part of the pack's history. After all, we were all there together when we rescued Blackie early that Good Friday morning.

Finding Blackjack

This is the young pit bull dog I found on the morning of April 10, 2009. This first picture shows how thin he was. So sad! He was roaming around the San Jacinto Wildlife Area, near Hemet, CA, miles from any homes. He greeted me by crawling over to me and rolling over to show his belly. He seemed so happy that someone was there for him. His skinny, almost hairless tail just kept wagging very fast.

I called the shelter to report a found dog just in case someone was looking for him. If I had left him at the shelter, and no one came for him, he would almost certainly have been euthanized. I couldn't let that happen to him. I guess I just like dogs too much.

I took him to the vet right away, and had him checked out. No microchip, no ID of any kind. So I got him his shots, and worming, since I thought I might keep him. The vet had me put him on a diet of small, frequent servings of water-soaked puppy food. I named him "Blackjack" since his life has been a gamble up to this point.

The second picture is Blackjack (AKA "Blackie") at a week in his new home. He's eating well, and getting stronger every day.

Below is Blackjack after of 11 days of good meals, a few baths and a lot of play time. He's such a sweet dog! He no longer looks like a starving dog. I'd like to keep him, but I already have 3 dogs, and my little neutered male beagle mix, doesn't like Blackjack. He's kind of afraid of him, I think.

So since my entire pack needs to be in agreement about Blackjack, I'm looking for a new home for him, or to place him with a good dog rescue. Preferably one that is familiar with this breed. In the mean time, he's safe with me.

Found Dog

About a week ago, I found a young black very friendly pit bull dog, with no ID. I filed a found dog report at the local shelter. I didn't leave him there, however, since he was so severely emaciated, he would probably have been euthanized. I'll post photos soon.
